Guidelines for Packing Camping Gear for Transport on Island Packer Boats
Pack your gear in a manner that will allow you to hike into the campground. Please do not have items dangling from your pack when you load it for transport. If you desire to tie extra items to your main pack, such as shoes, water bottles, lanterns, hiking poles... do this after arriving on the island. Island campgrounds are all accessed on dirt trails, Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa have dirt roads that are relatively flat, all other island campgrounds have elevation gains of 200-500 feet up to the campgrounds on more narrow foot trails.
Packing Tips For Island Landings by Skiff
Landings on San Miguel and temporarily on Santa Rosa during 2009 are by skiff or small shore-boat. These landings can be an adventure and sometimes you and your gear may get a bit wet from spray or even the splash of a wave in the surf zone. You will want to take precautions for yourself, and with items you are bringing ashore to keep dry. Though plastic bags can shield items from water, please place items inside plastic bags and then into you backpack or duffle bag, otherwise there is a risk that plastic bags can get punctured during handling. Sensitive gear such as personal electronics or photo gear should be packed in waterproof bags or containers designed for kayaking or small boating.
