Wildlife Watch This is a non-landing excursion that focuses on the natural history of this unique marine region, and the various types wildlife that depend on a healthy ocean. Students will have an opportunity to learn various wildlife identification techniques while having a chance to observe seals, sealions, dolphins, whales, and seabirds in their natural habitat. Within the waters of the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary 28 species of whales and dolphins have been identified. Eighteen of these species are seen frequently and are thought to be residents. Throughout the year it is possible to see common dolphin, Risso’s dolphin, minke whales, bottlenose dolphin, pacific white sided dolphin, Dall’s porpoise and an occasional pod of orcas. Four species of seals and sea lions are known to breed on the offshore islands. Harbor seals, California sea lions are both common around harbor breakwaters and Ancapa and Santa Cruz Islands. The islands in the Channel Islands National Park and the waters of the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary are also habitat for at least 60 species of seabirds. Some of the more common sightings of seabirds include western gulls, California brown pelicans, and several species of comorants and sheerwaters. |
